Caleb Stegall, Perry attorney, is running for Jefferson County attorney, a position currently held by Mike Hayes.

Moderator: Hi, this is reporter Mike Belt. I will be the moderator for our chat this afternoon with Caleb Stegall, a Perry attorney who is running for Jefferson County attorney. Welcome, Caleb.

Caleb Stegall: Thanks Mike, it's good to be here.

Moderator: Let's get right to our first question:

gdiepenb: If elected, what area would you try to strengthen in the office?

Caleb Stegall: Thanks for the question. There are a number of areas needing strengthening in the Jefferson County Attorney's office. First, it is vital to the office to increase the level of law enforcement and number of prosecutions in Jefferson County. Currently Jefferson County ranks 102nd out of 105 Kansas counties in per-capita felony dispositions. We need to bring those rates back up. In addition, the level of trust between our County Attorney's office and our local law enforcement agencies has really suffered in recent years. One of my top priorities will be to restore those cooperative relationships with law enforcement.

Campaign-finance lawsuit brought in Missouri Governor's Race - [KCStar] PDF Print E-mail

[published in The Kansas City Star on June 20, 2008]

A Knob Noster, Mo., man has sued Americans for a Better America and Thompson Communications over ads the group ran about Missouri gubernatorial candidates, Republicans Sarah Steelman and Kenny Hulshof.

Caleb Stegall, attorney for Matt Cleveland, alleges the group violated Missouri campaign-finance laws and may have violated federal law. The group’s ads in Joplin and Springfield were critical of Steelman and praised Hulshof, but did not specifically recommend a vote.

Americans for a Better America is a federally-registered 527 political organization. Under federal law, it cannot coordinate with any specific candidate or campaign for a specific candidate. The media buyer for Hulshof for Governor, John Thompson, is also the media buyer for the group.

Stegall argues high-profile abortion case in Kansas Supreme Court - [KCStar] PDF Print E-mail

Should Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline be allowed to keep the Planned Parenthood records he obtained while he was Kansas attorney general?

Planned Parenthood says no. But Kline says yes.

And did Kline take appropriate steps to safeguard the abortion records of 29 former patients while transferring them in January 2007 from his state office to his new county office?

Again, Planned Parenthood says no. And Kline says yes.

The seven justices on the Kansas Supreme Court spent nearly two hours Thursday hearing arguments on those two questions. The records are vital to Kline’s pending criminal case accusing Planned Parenthood of forging abortion records and performing illegal abortions.

Stegall says Planned Parenthood lawsuit 'an attempt to thwart prosecution' - [TopekaCJ] PDF Print E-mail
Jun 13, 2008 at 11:00 PM

[published in Topeka Capital-Journal on June 13, 2008]

An attorney for Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline asserted Thursday a lawsuit filed against Kline is a deliberate attempt to undermine criminal prosecution of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri.

Caleb Stegall, representing Kline before the Kansas Supreme Court, said intent of the lawsuit to compel Kline's surrender of late-term abortion records on 29 women and a request for legal sanctions against Kline was unambiguous.

The clinic, with backing of Attorney General Stephen Six, wants to dodge accountability on more than 100 felony and misdemeanor counts, Stegall said.

"This proceeding is being undertaken in a direct attempt to thwart prosecution," Stegall said. "They do not have the right to sue the prosecution."

The candidate has appointed former state Senator Bob Lyon as his campaign treasurer.

“I am pleased and honored that someone as well regarded in the county as Bob Lyon has agreed to be part of our campaign team. Sen. Lyon’s stellar record of public service to the people of Jefferson County is certainly something I intend to emulate,” Stegall said.
